Discipline of the Question
The limits of human qualia are limits on our access, not necessarily limits on what another being can experience.
Abstract
Human beings naturally use human capacities as the reference point for intelligence, consciousness, communication, and even possibility itself. This is understandable, but it is not harmless. When a nonhuman animal does not display language, sociality, self-recognition, or problem-solving in familiar human forms, we are tempted to treat the absence of familiar evidence as evidence of absence.
The problem is sharpened by qualia: experience is first-personal, so another being’s inner world cannot be directly entered or measured from the outside. This paper argues that such uncertainty should produce disciplined humility rather than human-centered denial. Drawing on Thomas Nagel, Jakob von Uexküll, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Frans de Waal, it proposes a method for approaching unfamiliar minds: observe before defining, test before explaining, and identify the assumptions inherited from human experience.
The examples here come chiefly from nonhuman animals, where the problem is already real and observable. But the method applies wherever an unfamiliar system’s intelligence, awareness, or inner experience may be mistaken for absent simply because it does not resemble our own.
1. The Human Measure
Human beings begin with themselves. We recognize pain because we have pain, language because we use language, and intelligence because we value our particular form of problem-solving. There is nothing irrational about beginning with the familiar. Every investigation requires a starting point.
The mistake occurs when the starting point quietly becomes the standard by which every other form of life or intelligence is judged.
Human-centered bias occurs when human traits are treated not merely as evidence of a capacity, but as the required form that capacity must take. If intelligence is defined by language, then a being that does not speak will appear unintelligent. If self-awareness is defined by recognizing oneself in a mirror, then species that depend on smell, touch, vibration, or sound are tested in a world organized around human vision. If culture means written records, cities, or formal teaching, then other forms of learning and transmission begin already classified as lesser.
The consequence is larger than a mistaken judgment about animals. The human measure narrows our understanding of what is possible. It makes familiarity feel like necessity. When we say, “I cannot see how that could work,” we too easily drift into, “That cannot work.”
The first statement describes the limits of our present imagination. The second makes a claim about reality and requires evidence.
2. Qualia and the Problem of Access
Qualia are the felt, first-person qualities of experience: what pain feels like, what the color red looks like, what a particular smell is like, or what it is like to navigate through the world by a sense we do not possess. The problem of qualia is not merely that experience is difficult to measure. It is that experience belongs to a point of view. No observer can fully step outside his own perspective and enter another being’s from within.
Thomas Nagel made this difficulty vivid in his essay, “What Is It Like to Be a Bat?” A human can learn how echolocation works, measure a bat’s behavior, and imitate aspects of its movement. Yet none of this reveals what a sonar-shaped world is like for the bat. Imagining oneself as a bat generally produces an image of a human behaving like a bat. It does not produce the bat’s experience.

This distinction matters because lack of direct access is often treated as a reason to withhold recognition. We do not directly experience another human being’s pain either. We infer it from words, behavior, bodily similarity, history, and shared situations. Because other humans resemble us and can report their condition in familiar language, the inference feels secure.
With an octopus, bat, crow, elephant, or dog, the bridge is thinner. But thinner is not the same as absent.
3. The Two Errors: Projection and Denial
Frans de Waal helps name the balance required here. Anthropomorphism is the error of projecting specifically human thoughts, emotions, or motives onto another being without sufficient evidence. A dog that looks guilty may not be experiencing the same moral emotion a human would call guilt. An octopus solving a puzzle need not be reasoning in sentences. Caution against projection is necessary.
But de Waal also warned against the opposite error: anthropodenial. This is the refusal to recognize genuine continuities between humans and other animals, or the animal-like qualities in ourselves. Fear of anthropomorphism can become an excuse for holding animals to a harsher standard of proof than humans. A rich explanation is allowed for human behavior, while an animal is granted only the simplest possible explanation even when the evidence points further.
The right response is neither “animals are just like us” nor “animals are nothing like us.” It is disciplined inference. Similarities matter because evolution produced continuities; differences matter because each species lives through a different body, sensory system, environment, and history. The task is to identify both without allowing either to become a shortcut.
Openness to unfamiliar forms of mind is not permission to see intelligence everywhere. It is a demand that both attribution and denial meet the same standard: evidence proportionate to the claim.
4. Different Worlds, Not Deficient Ones
Jakob von Uexküll’s idea of Umwelt provides a useful frame. Every organism lives in a meaningful world shaped by what it can perceive and what it can do. A tick, a bat, an octopus, and a human do not simply occupy the same environment with different levels of awareness. Each inhabits a different experiential world.
The world of the bat is organized by echoes. The world of a dog is saturated with scent. The world of an octopus is rich in touch, texture, camouflage, and distributed bodily control. These are not lesser versions of the human world. They are different worlds made meaningful by different bodies.
The octopus is an especially useful challenge to the human measure. Its nervous system is organized very differently from ours; much of its neural processing is distributed through its arms. It explores and manipulates through a body that has no hands, no bones, and no human social structure. Yet it can investigate unfamiliar objects, adapt its actions, and solve practical problems such as opening containers.
The significance is not that an octopus is secretly a small human mind in an unusual body. It is the opposite. Its intelligence is embodied differently. It offers a different route to flexible problem-solving.
The question should not be, “How close is this creature to human intelligence?” It should be:
What information can this creature detect, retain, integrate, and use in its own world?
This does not lower standards. It changes an invalid comparison into an investigation.
5. Language as a Bridge, Not a Window
Wittgenstein wrote, “If a lion could talk, we could not understand him.” The point is not simply that a lion could never learn words. It is that words draw much of their meaning from a form of life: shared practices, needs, perceptions, dangers, habits, and expectations. Two beings may exchange symbols and still lack enough common ground to understand what those symbols mean in lived experience.
Yet this should not make us pessimistic. A shared vocabulary does not grant direct access to qualia, but it can paint a reasonably good picture. One person can describe pain as burning, sharp, radiating, or electric. The listener does not feel that exact pain, but shared bodily reference and trusted language allow meaningful understanding.
That is the strength of a language contract: not perfect sameness of experience, but sufficient shared reference to create a reliable picture.
Communication with other animals may be thinner and slower, but the same principle applies. Repeated behavior, ecological context, physiology, vocalization, gesture, response to change, and patterns of learning can form a partial vocabulary. The goal is not to pretend that translation is complete. It is to expand the bridge honestly rather than declaring it impossible because it is incomplete.
6. A Discipline for the Unfamiliar
The practical answer is not to abandon human knowledge. It is to treat human knowledge as a reference point rather than the measure of reality.
This is a discipline of interpretation. Whether confronting an unfamiliar animal mind, an unexplained behavior, or a new form of intelligence, the same question must come first: are we seeing what is there, or have we already decided what it is allowed to mean?
Three questions can keep the inquiry open.
What is directly observable?
Separate behavior, structure, and response from the story immediately attached to them.
“The octopus rotated the lid and removed it” is an observation. “The octopus understood a jar” is an interpretation. The interpretation may be reasonable, but it should not be confused with the observation that supports it.
The same restraint applies broadly. Naming something too early—animal, machine, instinct, threat, intelligence, error—can make the name appear to explain the thing. Description must come first.
What does it do under change?
An unfamiliar capacity becomes clearer when conditions change. Does the system adapt to novelty? Does it transfer a solution to a new setting? Does it display memory, learning, prediction, integration of information, or flexible problem-solving?
This is where the question moves beyond surface resemblance. A being need not use human language, hands, tools, or social customs to demonstrate an ability to learn from its world. The test must fit the subject rather than requiring the subject to fit the test.
Which assumptions are ours?
Every investigation should ask what human expectations have been imported without notice. Are we treating vision as the primary sense? Language as the primary evidence of thought? A centralized brain as the only architecture for intelligence? Long lifespan, familiar emotions, or human-style cooperation as necessary conditions?
The purpose is not to discard every assumption. It is to make assumptions visible enough to test them.
Disciplined uncertainty runs beneath all three questions. “We do not yet know what this experience is like” is a stronger and more honest conclusion than “there is no experience here.” Uncertainty is not weakness when it accurately reflects the limits of access.
7. Beyond Animal Cognition
The evidence for this argument comes chiefly from animals because the problem is already present in plain sight. Animal minds are familiar enough to study, different enough to challenge us, and real enough that our errors have consequences.
When research defines intelligence too narrowly, it can produce poor tests, weak welfare standards, and missed forms of cognition. It can confuse an animal’s failure at a human task with the absence of an ability that might be expressed differently. It can also make us overlook what a different body, sensory world, or neural architecture makes possible.
But the principle is not limited to animals. It applies whenever human-style evidence is being used as the boundary of what can count as intelligence, awareness, learning, communication, or experience. The method does not require us to decide in advance what an unfamiliar system is. It begins earlier: with the recognition that our preferred evidence may reflect the limits of human access rather than the limits of what another system can perceive, learn, experience, or become.
Conclusion
Humanity does not escape its own point of view. We are embodied creatures, and every act of understanding begins from a human location. But we can become aware of that location and refuse to mistake it for the center or boundary of reality.
Qualia place a real limit on our access to other minds. They do not license the conclusion that unfamiliar minds lack experience, intelligence, or value. The proper response to that limit is neither projection nor denial. It is careful observation, proportionate evidence, better questions, and enough humility to let the thing itself teach us how it must be understood.
The discipline of the question begins with a simple intellectual restraint:
Familiarity is evidence of what we know, not proof of what is possible.
