A Proposal for Shared Responsibility in an Age of Transformative Technology
Introduction
Throughout history, humanity has repeatedly demonstrated an extraordinary ability to create powerful new technologies. Just as consistently, society has discovered that new capabilities require new responsibilities. This pattern has accompanied civilization from its earliest discoveries to the modern age.
The Technology Responsibility Framework (TRF) is not an argument against technological progress, corporate innovation, or economic success. On the contrary, technological innovation has improved health, expanded knowledge, increased prosperity, and connected the world in ways previous generations could scarcely imagine.
The purpose of TRF is different.
It proposes that as technology becomes increasingly capable of influencing how we think, communicate, learn, and make decisions, responsibility should grow alongside capability.
Rather than asking, “How do we slow technology?” TRF asks a different question:
How do we prepare humanity to live wisely with increasingly powerful technologies?
